Interesting Aerospace Quiz

Questions
1. Next time you take a flight, obey the following :
i. Don’t flush the plane toilet while seated.
ii. Carrying Mercury is prohibited.
iii. Laptops and CD-players are banned during take-off.
iv. and in case, you are a pilot, you are not allowed to have beards.
Are these rules justified?

2. In many events, athletes do take advantage of reduced aerodynamic drag that occurs on hot
days and at high altitudes. This reduction in aerodynamic drag, for example, has been
attributed to help U.S. athlete Bob Beamon (in Mexico City, 1968) to break the world long
jump record by almost 2 ft! Can one argue that an airplane will experience better performance
trying to take off from a high altitude runway on a hot day?

3. During high-speed maneuvers in modern fighter aircrafts, pilots experience centrifugal forces
equivalent to many times the force of gravity. When this happens, blood can pool in body’s
lower extremities and the pilot is susceptible to blacking out. A G-suit counters this problem
by squeezing the pilot with expandable bladders to keep more blood in the upper body. The
U.S. Navy’s Blue Angel pilots, however, choose not to wear them. Why?

4. In June 1918, 25 fighter aircraft prototypes were tested before members of German Air
Force. The overall winner was Fokker D-VIII, a monoplane having plywood-covered wings
with excellent strength and structural rigidity. The German Air Force placed an order for 400
aircrafts with a request that the rear wing spar be strengthened even further. After 20 of these
aircrafts were delivered in July 1918, several were quickly lost in flight when the wings tore off
at high speed. Time to blame the structural engineers! Those poor fellows again performed
the ground test, this time the wings loaded with sand bags to ultimate strength – what a
surprise! The airplane passed all of the static tests! Can you solve the mystery?

5. In the world of aircraft, does sun ever rise in the west?

6. During cryogenic testing at NASA’s National Transonic Facility (NTF) wind tunnel, operators
spray cryogenic liquid Nitrogen into the flow upstream of the fan. Why?

7. Is it possible to see “earthrise” or “earthset” from the moon?

8. Stealth aircrafts are supposed to be aircrafts difficult to detect. Perhaps you will be surprised
to know that exterior lights are attached to the Stealth and they are turned on when it tries to
be ‘stealthy’! Can you guess why?

9. Richard P. Feynman, the great Nobel Prize-winning physicist, called it “the most important
unsolved problem of classical physics”. What is it?

10. Through his spyglass, in 1609 Galileo observed Saturn’s rings. He publicly announced it.
Nobody believed him. So Galileo asked them to see it in their own eyes (using his spyglass).
But it happened other way round! Nobody could see the rings (including Galileo himself). Was
Galileo a liar?

Answers

1.
i. This has the danger of being vacuum-sealed. In 2001, a passenger flying across the
Atlantic on a Boeing-767 became vacuum-sealed to a toilet seat after flushing.
Engineers were later able to pry her loose only after the aircraft landed!
ii. Mercury corrodes Aluminum-alloys (what planes are largely made of).
iii. They emit electro-magnetic (EM) radiation which can interfere with aircraft’s sensitive
navigation instruments’ signals during the first 10,000 ft.
iv. Pilots must be clean-shaven. It’s not a style issue; a beard would stop the Oxygen
mask from fitting tightly enough, if the cabin pressure suddenly drops down.

2. No, the high altitude would translate into a long take-off run due to thinner air. Although drag
is less on a hot day at high altitude, so is lift. Also the low-density air results in a reduced
mass flow rate through the engine. So thrust is penalized. Shortest take-off runs occur at low,
cool altitudes.

3. The suits are restricting and uncomfortable, preventing the Angel pilots from performing
precision flight. Instead they keep their body in excellent shape with vigorous training. When
high ‘g’ occurs, they squeeze their abdominal muscles – something they master during
training session. Normally they can sustain up to 5g without any problem.

4. This may be the first documented case of a static aero-elastic phenomenon known as
aerodynamic divergence. When an airplane flies, the force of the air on the wing at certain
angles can cause the leading edge to twist upwards. According to Anthony Fokker’s
autobiography, the strengthening of rear wing spar caused the torsional axis to move
rearward and downstream of the wing’s aerodynamic center. When it reached a certain
critical dynamic pressure, the aerodynamic twisting torque exceeded the elastic restoring
torque and hence the blunder. Solution : Strengthen the D-VIII’s front spar so that the
torsional axis remains ahead of the aerodynamic center, as was in the original design.

5. Yes. If the aircraft is heading west faster than the Earth rotates, it would appear to the
occupants of the plane that the sun was rising in the west. Here is one such experience filed
in NASA archive. Jerry Glasser and Ted Ross once took off after sunset in an SR-71. They
flew a westerly course and since the day/night terminator travels at only about a thousand
miles per hour at the equator and the SR-71 (a supersonic spy plane) travels much faster
than that, they watched the sun rising in the west. After a while, they turned south, the sun set
again. Later in the mission, they headed west again and observed the sun slowly rise over the
horizon. Perhaps they are only people to see sunrise twice a day, both at west!

6. To vary the Reynolds’s number by altering density(ρ). This allows the model size to be
smaller and/or velocities to be lower to achieve the necessary transonic parameters.

7. No, due to earth-moon tidal forces, the moon’s rotation long ago became synchronized with
its revolution about the earth. Therefore, to an observer at a given site on the moon, the earth
will always appear in the same point in the sky.

8. During day, we can see aircrafts because they are darker than the sky. Brightening them with
lights make them less visible. Stealths match their luminance with that of the sky (In fact, it
can vary its luminance since you might get a situation when overcast sky changes to sunny
sky). Modern Stealths use electro-optical photo-sensor which turns on and adjusts the hightech
illumination devices automatically.

9. Turbulence.

10. Because Saturn is tilted, when its rings are facing Earth edge-on they “disappear” from our
view. We now know this happens every 14 years or so. But poor Galileo was questioned
about his sanity when rings “disappeared” and then “reappeared” a few years later.

Left click is not opening the Drive or Folder

This is an usual problem one can find with their PC.Suddenly, once when u try to open the drive,it opens a Pop Up saying that you have to select a program to open this file.what you can normally do is that,Go to Browe-->My Computer-->C:-->Program files--->Explorer---->Select Explorer.exe and open it.Its a bit tedious. At the same time, how many times can u repeat the same procedure? When ever you have to open a drive, you have to follow the same procedure. Is there any permanent solution for this problem? The answer would be obviously YES.

  1. First Go to RUN
  2. Type "cmd" and press ENTER
  3. Normally it will be C:Documents and Settings\Username>
  4. type cd.. and press enter
  5. Repeat the step 4 until you get C: alone on the screen
  6. Now type attrib -a -s -h -r autorun.inf press ENTER
  7. Then type del autorun.inf Press ENTER
  8. Repeat the same for howmany ever disks you have.
That means,Lets say,I have two disks on my HDD....C & D
Now,by the above process i could delete autorun.inf file in C Drive.I have to do the same for my D Drive also...To do that,

in Command prompt type D: press Enter

  1. Now type attrib -a -s -h -r autorun.inf press ENTER
  2. Then type del autorun.inf Press ENTER
Do the same for all your drives and restart the system once. Then It will work fine.

Its because of a virus Autorun.inf, which will be hidden in all your disks. To prevent itself, that virus will disable the default action of the left click.Once you remove the file in all your disks, your problem is solved.

Multiple yahoo messengers

I generally try to be online on my yahoo messenger from 6 PM to 6 AM everyday. Since, I have a lot of contacts throughout the world, people come online at various times depending on their convenience.
The problem is that I have 5 roommates and each of us would like to stay online and also we have only one computer. Hence, It is difficult for me to be online for the whole 12 hrs. I can’t sacrifice my sleep for chatting with somebody. More over it looks foolish to keep your status online when you are sleeping. That’s why I try to be online until I’m awake or until I’m on my PC. As a roommate I can’t stop my other roommates from checking mail etc.. On the other hand I can’t keep my status “Offline”. My offline status may send wrong signals to the people who were coming online just then. People will think that I’m offline and they hesitate to send messages. But the fact remains that even though one of my friends is chatting on his messenger account, I would be sitting beside him. People who are trying to reach me by messengers wouldn’t be aware of this fact. I was trying to find a solution for this. I searched on net but I could find only those type of messengers in which we can be logged in on different accounts (like yahoo, GTalk, Msn etc…).But I was searching for the messenger which can enable me to login when one of my friends is logged in on the same messenger. My wish may sound stupid. But I found the solution. I want to share this information with the people who are trying for the same.

There are some messengers like Ymulti messenger etc…But I was not satisfied with them. I did a lot of things and ended up with the working solution for my problem. I want to give you a simple way of enabling this feature on your yahoo messenger. In fact you have to follow many steps but I have done all that and saved that file for you. What you have to do is just download the registration file which is available here and double click on it to install. Then you can start using any number of messengers with different logins.

This registration file is being tested on all popular versions of Yahoo messengers( version 8 and 9)

Protect your mobile from theft - Solutions to recover stolen mobiles

(Click on the picture to visit the website of the respective application)

I went home for study holidays and came back to hostel on that dreadful day(When I was staying in hostel). I lost my first mobile that day. I even fought with my parents over that phone!!!I had lost my favourite N73 . I didn’t have the slightest clue on earth, if I could recover it . Mobiles were not allowed in the hostel, so I couldn’t even go and complain to the warden. Moreover I had exams from the next day. So ,I couldn’t do much about it. I hope most of us wouldn’t care much about the stolen mobiles, because of the fact that, it will take a great deal of time and effort for recovering it or some times despite all that you may not recover it . Many mobile users back-off when it comes to going to the police and complaining about their mobiles being lost. Thanks to the innovative developers, programmers who are coming up these days to provide you an easier way to recover your mobile;they given a sigh of relief to all those people who looking for their lost mobiles .It is notable that in the recent past many mobile manufacturers are providing these applications in the phone as an in-built accessory. But one of the more surprising fact is that the leading manufacturers like Nokia, Sony Ericsson are yet to provide these kind of applications along with their phone. Fortunately we have some applications of this kind which are compatible with most of these phones. I shall discuss some of them in brief here. So .....here go the 3 applications I am mentioning which can help you out in tracing your mobile.......(Which i think are worth the money you spend)

  1. MobiGuard

The advantage of this over others is that the advanced version of this will not give the thief an option to uninstall the application. Its cost is 399 INR with one year validation.

VMS(Virtual mobile security)

Virtual mobile security is yet another application in this category that more powerful than the others. This application provides many advanced features which will make your work easy in tracing the mobile. It will show a message displaying owners details and starts shouting once the SIM is changed. It will forward the calls that the thief is making to the predefined numbers. Explore its features on its website. The option “Buy now” is disabled on that site because of technical problems. If you are really interested to get this application, you can contact the developer of this program on +919967236678

Important note: please check the compatibility of your device for the respective application before you go for buying it.

Virgin's entry in Indian telecom network-Provides more benifits to youth

Get paid for attending incoming calls........When somebody mentions this, I would either think they are out of their mind or they are drunk. But in this case you have to believe me(As i'm neither). I was surprised when I saw this interesting news on a popular mobile magazine. The new revolution in Indian telecom networks.....One of the popular network providers in UK is here in indian market now, to provide better features and compete with leading providers like Bharathi Airtel,Vodafone(previously was Hutch)etc..It entered the Indian market with a different strategy. According to the chairman of Virgin Mobiles Sir Richard Branson this strategy aimed at attracting the youth(which is vital for any market, specially where india is concerned.)

I feel I can provide better information about this in the form of Q&A

  • Are they collaborating with any existing network providers or they are starting a new network?
The Virgin Mobiles is being introduced in india by Tata tele services, which is well known for its CDMA network(With the name “Tata Indicom”)
  • Does it mean all Tata indicom subscribers will be shifted to Virgin mobiles?
The answer would be “No”. They are not going to touch the existing users of Tata indicom. At the same time, even if any tata indicom user wants to shift also, he can't do that. For that he should get a new Virgin connection. Tata indicom and virgin are two seperate networks provided by the same provider.
  • Is it a GSM Network or CDMA?
It is CDMA network provider, but it introduced some handsets which contain RUIM(Removable user identity module) .To make people understand I can mention RUIM as SIM of CDMA network.
  • What are the advantages of choosing Virgin?
These are the advantages with this Network
(a) Every time you attend a call, That will add 10 paise to your balance
(b) If you can spend Rs 18/- out of your purse every month, you can get 100 messages per day free and also less local call rates on the weekends(39 paise,be it mobile or landline. Weekend means friday, saturday.sunday here). In normal package you have to pay Rs 1/- for local(for first 2 mins). After 2 mins you can call any local network for 50 paise(No extra charge). We can be more clear about it's package once it gets announced officially.
(c)All vergin mobile's RUIM's will have a secret folder where you can store personal messages with password protection.
(d)V Bytes-This is the option enabled on every vergin mobile, which takes you to the V bytes portal just by one touch.Mind you,This is applicable only for Branded Vergin mobiles.
  • From where can I get a Virgin connection?
It's introduced only in 50 main cities(17 sectors) in india. It will take some time for it to spread its network across the country. First check whether your city is there in the list provided in the website or not. If it is there, then you can go to the retailer in your respective city and get new connection. If it is not in the list, you may have to wait for some more time.
  • What type of handsets they are offering?
At present they have announced 5 different colour handsets
  • V Bling
  • V Sleek
  • V kewl
  • V Trendy(which is yet to be announced)
  • Nokia 2505
  • V Swing
These handsets range is from Rs 1999/- to Rs 4799/-,which include handsets having MP3 player. FM Radio,1.3 MP camera etc...We can expect better kind of handsets from Virgin mobile in future.

  • Where can i get more information about Virgin mobiles?
You can visit Virgin mobile's official website or can search on some popular web encyclopedias like Wikipedia.
  • What is it’s growth strategy ?
It might use the technique of MVNO(Mobile virtual network operator),which was used by it in other countries and became successful. This means that, it will buy space from other network providers and sell it under their name.

I hope my attempt of clearing your doubts regarding this matter has been successful. If not, I would be more than happy to answer your questions or to get your feedback.
